Ballogy COO Jordan Green on how one lunch and a lot of listening became the NWAC Command Center and a four-year partnership across 37 colleges.
There’s a moment in every sales meeting where you’re supposed to start selling. I know it well. You’ve rehearsed the pitch, you’ve got the product up on your laptop, and the person across the table is waiting for you to make your move.
Our Director of Athletics, Shawn Jones, had connected with Marco Azurdia, Executive Director of the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC). The NWAC is based in the Pacific Northwest, but Marco happened to be in Dallas spending time with family. So we went to him. Shawn drove in from out of town, and the two of us sat down with Marco for lunch.
There’s an old saying in the startup world: do things that don’t scale. Driving across the state for one lunch with one person doesn’t scale. But sometimes that’s exactly the thing that moves your company forward.
Shawn and I came to show Marco what Ballogy could do. We were ready to walk him through how Coach HQ and the Ballogy app could transform athletics across the NWAC. The product was ready. The demo was loaded. All we had to do was talk.
So we didn’t.
Before we went into sell mode, we wanted to understand what kept Marco up at night and what gave the conference headaches. So we asked. Then we did the hardest thing in any sales meeting: we stayed quiet and let him answer.
The problem he described wasn’t flashy. It was the grinding, everyday kind. The letter of intent (LOI) process, the paperwork that moves a prospective student-athlete from recruited to committed, wasn’t uniform across the NWAC’s 37 colleges. There was no synced system and no standard form. Every school was doing its own version of the same thing, year after year. On top of that, the conference didn’t have the budget for the enterprise tools the bigger leagues lean on.
Sitting there, Shawn and I both knew we weren’t hearing an objection. We were hearing a need.
I believe we’re living in a time when technology can be built fast and built for a specific purpose. Customers don’t want an off-the-shelf product they have to bend their process around. They want something shaped to the problem they actually have. At Ballogy, that’s who we want to be: a solution provider for athletics, whether you’re a coach, an athlete, a parent, or an entire conference.
So we made a choice. What started as a Ballogy product to sell became something custom-built for the NWAC. We used AI tools to put together a prototype quickly, then teamed up with the design firm Design Me to bring it to life. Our VP of Product, Fedrick Bowe, helped drive it home. The whole way through, the NWAC’s ad hoc committee was right there with us, suggesting changes, flagging fixes, and telling us what actually worked in the field. They didn’t just sign off on it. They helped shape it.
We built it in a matter of months and brought it back to NWAC leadership. They loved it, and they had ideas to make it even better, so we tuned it to fit them. The result is the NWAC Command Center, one platform where coaches, athletic directors, assistant ADs, administrative assistants, prospective student-athletes, and their parents can all work in the same place at the same time. Scholarship allocation, custom department forms, and the full LOI process now run the same way across all 37 schools.

A few months later, that one lunch in Dallas turned into a four-year deal.
It’s a great feeling to see the announcement go live. It didn’t start with a pitch. It started with showing up, asking a question, and having the patience to listen to the answer.
Bring us the headache. We’ll build the solution.
